The president of Sri Lanka restates his support for Palestine having its own state

On June 23, President Ranil Wickremesinghe restated Sri Lanka's steadfast support for the creation of a distinct Palestinian state "within five years."

The president said that a million dollars had been raised in response to his government's Gaza Children's Fund by kind citizens, despite the nation's already impoverished economy.

During a special ceremony for the afflicted people of Gaza, conducted at a Grand Jummah Mosque in the Muslim-dominated eastern province of Kattankudy, Mr. Wickremesinghe delivered these words.

On October 7 of last year, Hamas terrorists assaulted Israel, killing over 1,200 people and capturing about 250 more. Over 37,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel's frequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip since that time.

He said, "Sri Lanka would never change its stance on the Gaza clashes, action must be taken to set up an independent Palestine state within five years, and the killing of civilians must stop."

"People shouldn't have to bear the cost of Hamas's issues. It is imperative that we all work together to find a solution to the Palestine crisis, with a state of Palestine established within the next five years. As we have been doing for the last 40–50 years, wasting time discussing it will not be beneficial. Wickremesinghe said, "Israel's security concerns must be addressed separately."

The Gaza Children's Fund was established by the Sri Lankan government in spite of the nation's present economic collapse. As he took a donation check from the mosque's trustees in support of the cause of Gaza's children, Wickremesinghe said, "We contributed a million dollars, we asked for generous public contributions and our request received good response."
