Delhi, New Delhi In the midst of nationwide demonstrations and student lawsuits demanding an investigation into allegations of paper leaks, the CBI filed a formal complaint on Sunday over purported anomalies in the May 5 medical entrance exam, NEET-UG, based on a referral from the Union education ministry.
The CBI sent special teams to Gujarat and Bihar in response to suspected anomalies in the NEET-UG.
According to officials, the ministry claimed that "certain isolated incidents" happened in a few states over the course of the test in a complaint that is now included in the FIR.
The CBI has assigned the investigation high priority and has sent special teams to Godhra and Patna, where police have reported question paper leak incidents.
They further said that the agency intends to assume control of the probe into these incidents that the police in Gujarat and Bihar have reported.
"Steps are being taken to take over cases registered by state police," a government source said.
The CBI's decision was in response to a demand made by some protesting students, and it occurred one day after the ministry said it would turn over the investigation into the alleged irregularities to the agency.
A CBI spokeswoman stated, "The ministry of education has asked the CBI to look into all of the allegations of irregularities, including conspiracy, cheating, impersonation, violation of trust, and evidence destruction by candidates, institutions, and intermediaries.
The authorities claim that a closer assessment will be focused on any involvement that public workers may have had in the conduct of the examination, as well as the whole range of events and the bigger conspiracy.
According to them, the agency filed a new case under IPC sections 120-B and 420 against an anonymous individual.
A top education ministry official said on Saturday that "some cases of alleged irregularities, cheating, impersonation, and malpractice have been reported in NEET-UG which was conducted on May 5."
After a review, it was determined that the subject should be turned over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a thorough investigation in order to ensure openness in the conduct of the examination process," the official had said.
The opposition accused the administration of playing with the future of students, which led to demonstrations in many cities, legal action, and a political backlash.
Ten candidates have petitioned the Supreme Court to order the CBI and ED to look into the alleged anomalies in the NEET-UG.
Additionally, a directive to the Bihar Police to accelerate the case's investigation and submit a report to the highest court was requested in the plea.
In a different case, the Supreme Court requested comments from the Center, the NTA, and other parties on a number of petitions, some of which called for a court-monitored probe and the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 test.
On identical requests, the Supreme Court also put a stop to proceedings in a number of high courts.
The National Testing Agency administered the test on May 5 at 4,750 locations throughout 571 cities, including 14 international cities. More than 23 lakh applicants sat the exam.
Six students from a center in Faridabad, Haryana, made the list of pupils who achieved a perfect 720, which is unique in the history of the NTA and raised questions about anomalies.
Grace marks given to students to make up for lost time at six centers also caused criticism. Later, the Center informed the Supreme Court that the grace marks would no longer be used and that the 1,563 students would have the opportunity to retake the exam.
For admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other relevant courses in public and private universities throughout the nation, the NTA administers the NEET-UG test.
Amidst criticism about purported inconsistencies in competitive examinations, the Center removed NTA Director General Subodh Singh on Saturday and constituted a seven-member committee led by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan to examine the organization's operations and suggest changes to the tests.
The NEET-PG entrance test was the fourth entrance exam to be affected in recent days, and it was postponed.
