Egypt was the country with the greatest number of casualties—at least 600—up from 300 the day before.

Makkah: In a terrible turn of events, 922 pilgrims from different nations are said to have died during this year's Haj pilgrimage in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, as a result of extreme heat that reached 51.8 degrees Celsius. At least 68 Indians are among the deceased.

The ambassador, who spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Wednesday, June 19, on condition of anonymity, said that the fatalities were caused by natural causes, advanced age, and severe weather. Egypt was the country with the greatest number of casualties—at least 600—up from 300 the day before.

This figure comprises 132 Indonesians, 60 Jordanians, 35 Tunisians, 13 from the Iraqi Kurdistan area, 11 Iranians, and 3 Senegalese in addition to the Egyptians. The ambassador also acknowledged that a certain number of Indian pilgrims were missing, but he would not say how many.

People are using social media sites like Facebook in an attempt to find their loved ones as a result of the grave circumstances.Over 200 pilgrims were reported deceased in 2023, the majority of them were from Indonesia.

This year, over 1.83 million people—including over 1.6 million from 22 countries—performed the Haj. Muslims who are financially and physically capable of doing so are required by religion to make the Haj pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in their lives.
