The government renews the five-year ban on the LTTE

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967's subsections (1) and (3) were used by the Union Home Ministry to enforce the prohibition.

In an effort to strengthen the LTTE's base of support in India, especially in Tamil Nadu, and to encourage a separatist sentiment among the populace, the Centre on Tuesday prolonged the group's five-year ban.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967's subsections (1) and (3) were used by the Union Home Ministry to enforce the prohibition.

The home ministry issued a statement stating that the central government believes the LTTE is still engaging in operations that jeopardize the integrity and security of the nation.

It claimed that despite losing the war in May 2009 in Sri Lanka, the LTTE has not given up on the idea of "Eelam," or an independent nation for Tamil people. It has been secretly advancing this cause through fund-raising and propaganda campaigns, and the group's surviving leaders and cadres have also started initiatives to bring together the dispersed activists and revive the organization both domestically and abroad.

"The pro-LTTE groups/elements continue to foster a separatist tendency between the masses and enhance the support base for LTTE in India and especially throughout Tamil Nadu, which will ultimately have a strong separating influence over the territorial integrity of India," the notification stated. It also cited other factors.
