Elgar Parishad case: Gautam Navlakha is granted bail by the SC

A panel of Justices M M Sundresh and S V N Bhatti declined to prolong the stay placed on Navlakha's bail in the case by the Bombay High Court's judgment.

In the Elgar Parishad-Maoist connections case, activist Gautam Navlakha was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

A panel of Justices M M Sundresh and S V N Bhatti declined to prolong the stay placed on Navlakha's bail in the case by the Bombay High Court's judgment.

Additionally, it mandated that Navlakha pay Rs 20 lakh for house arrest security costs.

Given the specifics of the high court ruling granting bail, we are inclined not to prolong the stay. The trial would take a very long time to finish. We won't prolong the stay without delving deeply into disagreements. The panel ordered that the opposing party get payment of Rs 20 lakh as soon as possible.

The highest court observed that Navlakha had been detained for more than four years and that no formal accusations had been brought against her.

On December 19 of last year, the Bombay High Court granted Navlakha bail, but it also postponed its decision for three weeks as the NIA requested more time to file an appeal with the highest court.

After being detained in August of 2018, Navlakha was given permission by the Supreme Court to be put under house arrest in November of the previous year. At the moment, he lives in Navi Mumbai.

The complaint concerns alleged provocative remarks made on December 31, 2017, at the Elgar Parishad conference in Pune. According to police, these remarks incited violence the following day in the vicinity of the Koregaon-Bhima war monument, which is located on the outskirts of the city in western Maharashtra.

In this instance, sixteen activists have been taken into custody; five of them are presently out on bond.
