At least nine people killed when the Mexico rally's stage falls

The local governor of Nuevo León state in northern Mexico has reported that a stage collapse during an election campaign event resulted in at least nine fatalities, including a toddler, and fifty injuries.

The event happened in San Pedro Garza Garcia, a city close to Monterrey, when center-left presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez was giving a rally.

Mr. Maynez was seen talking to supporters after the incident, and he was not hurt in the collapse. He added that many people on his squad had suffered injuries.

According to a post by Mr. Maynez on X, the fall was brought on by an abrupt blast of wind.

There seems to be footage of the lighting structure collapsing when many individuals were on stage.

A video that was shared on social media showed Mr. Maynez greeting his fans and then scurrying away as a section of the building collapsed.

Samuel Garcia, the state governor, advised the locals to remain indoors due to the thunderstorms and high winds that are occurring.

"Avoid going outside if at all possible since there are storms and unusual winds. "I'll update you," he wrote on X.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the president of Mexico, responded to the tragedy by saying he was giving "a hug to family members, friends of the victims and political supporters".

According to national surveys, Mr. Maynez, the candidate for the Citizens' Movement party, is now in third position.

The next election, scheduled on June 2, is expected to be one of the deadliest in the nation's history.

Approximately 200 politicians, public employees, and candidates have reportedly been killed or intimidated in the run-up to the election, according to a recent study conducted by the Mexican political consulting company Integralia.
