Amazon plans to spend $1.3 billion and generate 3,000 jobs in France

As part of the nation's annual "Choose France" event, which gets underway on Monday, the French president had announced on Sunday that Amazon and other businesses, including GSK and Accenture, will make announcements worth billions of dollars.

Amazon said on Monday that it will establish more than 3,000 permanent positions in France and spend more than 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in the country's activities.

As part of the nation's annual "Choose France" event, which gets underway on Monday, the French president had announced on Sunday that Amazon and other businesses, including GSK and Accenture, will make announcements worth billions of dollars.

According to a statement from the firm, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest in expanding logistical infrastructure in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region as well as cloud infrastructure in the Paris area to serve France's burgeoning generative AI market.

The need for cloud services has been fueled by the growing popularity of GenAI, and France has emerged as a leader in AI, home to successful businesses like Mistral and Poolside. Businesses like Google and Meta have established AI research facilities in the nation.

Over 22,000 permanent workers are employed by Amazon in its cloud and online retail divisions, and the company has spent over 20 billion euros in its French operations since 2010.

"These positions are extra to the 2,000 we previously declared for 2024," said Amazon France's national manager, Frédéric Duval.

A portion of the investment would also go into growing its logistics network in order to lower carbon emissions and speed up delivery. In France, it operates around 35 logistical facilities.
