UCC draft report approved by the Uttarakhand Cabinet; bill expected to be submitted in Assembly on February 6
Uttarakhand: On February 6, during the Uttarakhand Assembly session, the state administration is expected to propose the UCC Bill after Cabinet clearance of the UCC draft report.
According to news agency ANI, the Uttarakhand Cabinet met under the supervision of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the Chief Minister's house, where they adopted the report on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
The UCC Bill is expected to be introduced by the government during the Uttarakhand Assembly session on February 6 after Cabinet clearance of the UCC draft report. The Uttarakhand Assembly has already scheduled a special four-day session for February 5-8.
Uttarakhand would be the first state in India to embrace UCC after independence once it is put into effect. In Goa, it has been in use ever since the Portuguese took over.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami received the draft from the UCC drafting committee on Friday. The committee was chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.
Dhami had previously said that 2,33,000 persons had offered feedback on the draft UCC. He said earlier this week that "the draft report is approximately 740 pages long and is in 4 volumes."
In the state, UCC suggests equal civil law for all groups, regardless of caste or religion. It will provide every person access to equal marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws.
One of the primary promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the people of Uttarakhand during the 2022 assembly elections would be fulfilled with the adoption of the UCC Bill in the state.
"We had promised our people to bring UCC in Uttarakhand before the start of the assembly session," Dhami said on Friday at a ceremony held at the Chief Sevak Sadan of the Chief Minister Camp Office. UCC will be implemented in accordance with this." with a resolution that the BJP has approved.
