Toby Keith, a country music musician, passes away at age 62 from stomach cancer
Following a fight with stomach cancer, country music artist Toby Keith passed away on Monday at the age of 62.
"Toby Keith died away quietly in the company of his family yesterday night, February 5. He battled bravery and dignity in his war. A message on Keith's website and social media read, "Please respect his family's privacy at this time."
Elaine Schock, Keith's publicist since 2003, told CNN that he had passed away.
According to his publicist, Keith is survived by his wife Tricia and his three children, Shelley, Crystal, and Stellan, CNN said. His two brothers and mother are still alive.
In 2022, he disclosed his colon cancer diagnosis.
Keith won the Country Icon Award and gave a performance at the September 2023 People's Choice Country Awards.
"Red Solo Cup" and "I Won't Talk About Me" are two of his successful songs; he launched his first album in 1993. After the 9/11 attacks, his song "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)" from 2002 became a successful song.
Keith entertained at events for Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush in addition to hundreds of performances for US military men serving abroad, notably in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Occasionally, during his performances, he would give wheelchairs to wounded veterans.
In 2010, Keith, a self-described third-generation Democrat, told CNN that politics had no bearing on his support for military personnel.
"There is nothing political for backing the troops," he said.
Keith received the National Medal of Arts in 2021, which the National Endowment for the Arts referred to as "the highest award given to artists as well as arts patrons by the United States government." At the time, President Donald Trump was in office.
We will be updating this story as it develops.
