The Marxist Party of Sri Lanka will go to India on official business

According to the release, the Indian delegation consists of Professor Anil Jayanti, a member of the executive committee, senior MLA Vijeta Herath, secretary Nihal Abeysinghe, as well as JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Having led two deadly insurgencies in 1971 and 1987–1990, the JVP has a mixed history.

On Monday, a team from Sri Lanka's Marxist-Leninist communist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), will begin an official tour to India.

"A delegation of JVP, the biggest political group under the umbrella body National People's Power (NPP), is scheduled to depart for India tomorrow (Monday) from Colombo on a formal invitation of the Government of India," stated a statement from the party.

According to the release, the Indian delegation consists of Professor Anil Jayanti, a member of the executive group, senior MLA Vijeta Herath, secretary Nihal Abeysinghe, as well as JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In at least one opinion survey, the JVP, which spearheaded the anti-India campaign against the Indo-Lanka pact in 1987–1990, has maintained a lead. The major parties of the island country have trailed behind the NPP wide front, which has dominated the polls.

According to surveys, popular support for the NPP has significantly increased in the post-economic crisis era starting in 2022, particularly in attitudes on anti-corruption. Dissanayake has declared his intention to run in the next presidential election that is scheduled for later this year. Analysts question if the party can grow its existing base of three percent votes to the fifty percent plus one required to win the president. Having led two deadly insurgencies in 1971 and 1987–1990, the JVP has a mixed history.
