Restoring the speed restriction to 100 km/h on the Yamuna and Noida-Greater Noida Express

The speed limit on the Yamuna and Noida-Greater Noida Motorways is yearly lowered to 75 km/h for light cars and 60 km/h for big vehicles as a precaution during the winter months.

The Yamuna Motorway and the Noida-Greater Noida Motorway now have a speed restriction of 100 km/hr for light cars as of February 16, according to a story in the Hindustan Times. The modification follows the temporary reduction of the speed limit to 75 km/h on December 15, 2018, as a result of fog-related traffic incidents.

On both motorways, the annual restriction for light vehicles is 100 km/h, while the annual limit for heavy trucks is 80 km/h. However, the speed limit is yearly lowered to 60 km/h for heavy trucks and 75 km/h for light cars as a precaution during the winter months.

Despite the higher speed restriction, Anil Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), emphasised the need of driving responsibly. He said that even though the speed limit is 100 km/h, there have been a lot of speeding tickets issued on the Yamuna Motorway, raising concerns for other drivers' safety as well as for the violating drivers themselves.

Wintertime Difficulties and Historical Occurrences

On December 2, visibility was severely limited due to heavy fog over Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) from the previous winter, with many regions seeing visibility levels of only 50 metres or less. In the last two months, the Yamuna Motorway has seen at least five accidents and pile-ups despite the reduced speed restriction.

The traffic police issued 2,671 challans for speed limit infractions between December 15 and February 15. According to the statistics, there were relatively fewer instances of speeding on the Noida-Greater Noida Motorway because of the route's heavy traffic. Those who received more than three challans had their driving privileges banned, and offenders were had to pay a fine of ₹2,000.

In Gautam Buddha Nagar, speeding is among the top five traffic infractions. The amount of traffic challans issued for speeding in 2022 was over 37,000; in 2023, that figure almost doubled. In order to improve overall road safety, officials are emphasising how important it is to obey speed restrictions.
