Manoj Jarange-Patil is a prominent person leading the quota push in the Maratha Reservation. But who is he?
Maratha quota: Manoj Jarange-Patil, an activist who spearheaded the movement for caste-based quota, has expressed cautious approval for the reservation measure that the Maharashtra Assembly just approved.
On February 20, the Maharashtra Assembly approved a measure establishing a special 10 percent quota for the Maratha people in unanimity. To address this crucial matter, the state administration convened a one-day extraordinary session of the state legislature. The Eknath Shinde-led coalition government adopted the bill, which aims to provide the Maratha community a 10% quota. The Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2018, which was established under the leadership of former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is remarkably similar to this quota.
Leader of the opposition supports Maratha reservations
Vijay Wadettiwar, the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, emphasised that the opposing parties support the notion of granting the Maratha community quota. The state has proposed legislation three times in the last ten years with the goal of giving the Maratha minority reservations.
Maratha quota campaigner calls for a special meeting.
Manoj Jarange-Patil, a Maratha quota campaigner who is now fasting in the hamlet of Antarwali Sarti in the Jalna district, held a special session. A variety of steps are part of their demands, such as providing free education from kindergarten to postgraduate level, assigning government employment recruiting slots to Marathas, and distributing Kunbi diplomas to all Marathas.
Since the Kunbi group is considered to be part of the Other Backward Class (OBC), Jarange-Patil is in favour of giving all Marathas a Kunbi certificate. Enabling Marathas to benefit from OBC quota privileges is the goal of this effort.
Manoj Jarange-Patil is who?
After getting married, Jarange-Patil—who was originally from the nearby Beed area—moved to Shahgarh in the Jalna district. He had an interest in education and government work around fifteen years ago.became actively engaged in the agitation that supported Maratha reservations. He showed his unshakeable commitment to the cause by actively taking part in several marches and rallies over these years. He sold two and a half of his four acres of agricultural property in order to support himself.
Jarange-Patil established the Shivba group.
Originally connected to the Congress Party, Jarange-Patil went on to establish the Shivba Sangathan. The purpose of this unit was to organise and direct demonstrations in support of the Maratha community's demand for reservation privileges.
In Jalna, Jarange-Patil oversaw a three-month movement.
After the Supreme Court overturned the Maratha reserve quota in 2021, Jarange-Patil actively participated in demonstrations in a number of locations. Hundreds of people participated in his notable three-month-long struggle at Sasht-Pimpalgaon, Jalna district.
September hunger strike attracts the interest of employees
He became well-known after going on a hunger strike in September of last year in Atravali-Sarete hamlet, which strengthened his reputation as a well-known Maratha activist.
Activists offer Bill hesitant support.
The activist who spearheaded the caste-based quota agitation has voiced his cautious support for the newly enacted Maharashtra Assembly reservation law. Nonetheless, he contended that the suggested reserve did not entirely align with the community's requirements.
Saying, "The approved allocation will benefit only 100-150 Maratha persons, keeping the majority of our community without reservation," Jarange-Patil voiced his displeasure with the government's decision. For this reason, I oppose the application of "Sage Soare." Declaring that he was going to make information about the movement public, he reaffirmed his resolve to fight for what is rightly his.
Sage-Soare: What is it?
A Marathi term meaning "family tree relatives" is "Sej-Soyare," which refers to members of the family tree. As stated in the official government announcement, the phrase encompasses the "father, grandfather, great-grandfather, as well as relatives of the applicant's older people resulting from marriage among the same caste."
The government would not make any appointments till the Maratha reservation is granted
Jarange-Patil went on to say that unless Marathas have reservations, no government position should be appointed. But if the government decides to fill such positions, he insisted on having some positions set aside for Maratha people. The Maratha activist also called for the dismissal of all charges brought against the demonstrators who took part in the struggle throughout the years.
