95-year-old renowned jurist Fali S. Nariman dies dead

Fali S. Nariman, a seasoned senior Supreme Court attorney and eminent constitutional jurist, died away in New Delhi on February 21. He was ninety-five years old.


Nariman was a fervent advocate for civil rights. He was a significant public figure whose critical views on judicial developments were quite significant.


Renowned constitutional attorney Nariman has argued several important issues, such as the well-known NJAC ruling.


Nariman joined the Bombay High Court as a lawyer in November 1950, rising to the position of senior advocate in 1961.


He began his legal career at the Bombay High Court and moved to Delhi in 1972 to serve for the Supreme Court of India, capping nearly 70 years of profession. In addition, he moved to Delhi from Bombay in May 1972 and assumed the role of Additional Solicitor General of India.


Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior lawyer and Congress politician, lamented Fali Nariman's passing and referred to it as "the end of an era".


"End of an era - #Falinariman passed died. He was a living legend who will always have a place in the hearts and thoughts of those involved in law and public life. In spite of all of his many accomplishments, Mr. Singhvi wrote on X that "he remained true to his values and compared a spade to a Said spade, a quality shared by all his talented son."


In particular, law students and young attorneys read his memoirs "Before Memory Fades" often as a source of inspiration. Among his other publications are "The State of Nation" and "God Save the Honourable Supreme Court".
