This is a chronology of events in the case of Bilkis Bano's gang rape and the death of seven of her family members. On Monday, the Supreme Court overturned the Gujarat government's decision to release 11 prisoners on remission.


Verdict in the Bilkis Bano case: A timeline of events

The Gujarat government's decision to award remission to 11 prisoners in the case of gang rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members was overturned by the Supreme Court on Monday. The following is the sequence of events in the case:


*March 3, 2002: In Randhikpur village, close to Ahmedabad, a ferocious crowd assaulted the family of 21-year-old Bilkis Bano. While seven of her family members were killed, the lady was gang-raped.


*The Supreme Court ordered the CBI to look into the Bilkis Bano case in December 2003.


* January 21, 2008: For raping Bilkis Bano and murdering seven of her family members, eleven defendants were found guilty by a special court and given life sentences.


*December 2016: The Bombay High Court stays the ruling on an appeal brought by eleven inmates facing life in jail.


May 2017: The Bombay High Court confirmed eleven convicted individuals' life sentences.


* April 23, 2019: The Gujarat government is ordered by the Supreme Court to reimburse Bilkis Bano for Rs 50 lakh.


* May 13, 2022: Under its policy of July 9, 1992, the Gujarat government was ordered by the Supreme Court to take into account a request for the early release of a convicted person.


* August 15, 2022: Eleven prisoners were freed from Godhra Sub-Jail in accordance with the Gujarat government's relaxation policy.


*August 25, 2022: In response to a PIL against the early release of the prisoners brought jointly by former CPI MP Subhashini Ali, journalist Revati Laul, as well as professor Roop Rekha Verma, the Supreme Court notifies the Center and the Gujarat government.


* November 30, 2022: Bilkis Bano files a case with the Supreme Court against the Gujarat government's decision to pardon 11 prisoners, claiming that the society has been "shocked" by their early release.


* December 17, 2022: The Gujarat state government was deemed to be the "appropriate government" to assess a convict's appeal for premature release, according to the Supreme Court's ruling on May 13. * January 8, 2024: Eleven convicted persons' sentences are overturned by the Supreme Court, which claims the rulings were "stereotypical" and issued without due consideration. The SC ordered the prisoners to turn themselves in to the jail administration within a week.
