As part of an effort to develop optical technologies for use in chips, Japan's sector Ministry said on Tuesday that it would provide subsidies totaling around 45.2 billion yen ($307 million), with the goal of bolstering the nation's semiconductor sector.


With advice from SK Hynix and Intel, participating firms include NTT, NEC, Furukawa Electric, Shinko Electric, and Kioxia.


Utilizing light to transmit messages, accelerate transmission, and reduce power consumption is the aim of the semiconductor industry.


Future game changers, that's what Japan's Industry Minister Ken Saito hoped the technology will be.


With China making strides in cutting-edge technology, Japan is taking the initiative in an effort to hold onto its dominance in the chip business and strengthen its relationships with allies.
