The municipal transportation organization, which runs public bus routes in Mumbai and the nearby towns of Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira-Bhayandar, said that the fine amount collected on January 2 was eight times more than the normal daily fee of Rs 7,000. The municipal initiative operates a fleet of over 3,000 buses that transport between 32 lakh and 35 lakh people daily on different routes across Mumbai. As to the press release, BEST will charge a passenger 10 times the standard rate if they are discovered to be riding without a valid ticket. It initiates legal action under Section 460(h) of the Mumbai Municipal Act, 1988 in response to a refusal to pay the fine.


Such passengers may be subject to a one-month prison sentence, a Rs. 200 fine, or both under this clause.
