How fast is the broadband at home? Furthermore, how does it stack up against other local and regional ISPs (Internet service providers)? Would a 5G connection work better? Why speed and quality are more important than ever in the era of remote work is one of the many fast inquiries that customers often ask.

According to OpenSignal's most recent research of fixed broadband offerings in India, Reliance JioFiber is not as fast as Airtel's Xstream broadband service in terms of download speeds. Additionally, the level of service quality doesn't change. By the way, regional ISPs are still in charge.

According to OpenSignal statistics, Airtel JioFiber's average download speed is 33.8 Mbps, compared to 44.1 Mbps for Airtel.

The speeds shown in this test are indicative of what a user would experience on a provider's network on a daily basis. In July of last year, when the statistics was last updated, Airtel recorded an average speed of 42.7 Mbps, which was 8 Mbps quicker than Jio.

Jio's record speed of 155.3Mbps is surpassed by Airtel's 213.6Mbps in the broadband peak download speed score. Based on the quality of the network and the speed they signed up for, this indicator shows what broadband consumers experience at the fastest speeds.

Jio's 155.5Mbps was much slower than Airtel's 219.4Mbps in this statistic from the previous year's report.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released their most recent statistics for October 2023, and it shows that there are 37.35 million wired broadband subscribers in India. This figure includes the DSL, fiber, and cable technologies that ISPs have deployed. At the end of September, there were 36.87 million wired broadband subscribers, representing a modest monthly growth rate of 1.32%.

Reliance Jio (34.08%), Bharti Airtel (25.77%), and BSNL (19.82%) have the most market shares in this demography.

The 40Mbps speed of Airtel's Xstream internet package begins at ₹499, while JioFiber offers entry-level plans with a 30Mbps option for ₹399 per month. Furthermore, there are additional options available with Airtel Reliance JioFiber, including 30Mbps, 100Mbps, 150Mbps, 300Mbps, 500Mbps, and 1Gbps. Both ISPs provide backup internet plans for houses with a 10Mbps rating as well.

Regarding the broadband upload speed statistic, Airtel leads Jio by 6.5Mbps (33.3Mbps vs. 26.8Mbps). The scenario is not all that different. The user's experience with programs such as cloud storage services and file sharing across multiple providers will be largely determined by these typical upload speeds.

It should be mentioned that ISPs often set the upload speed to be a smaller percentage of the customer-selected download speed (and have been known to reveal this beforehand). The fiber broadband networks offered by Airtel and Reliance Jio are advertised as having symmetric, or equal, download and upload speeds. For instance, if you choose a 100Mbps package, it will be valid for your connection's peak download and upload rates.

In India, JioFiber has shown impressive performance in terms of broadband consistency at the national level, outperforming Airtel with a score of 68.4% as opposed to 71.6%. This crucial parameter assesses the level of service quality, the constancy of upload and download speeds, accounting for fluctuations and highlighting any ups or downs.

It is described as a collection of six essential performance metrics by OpenSignal, which include time to first byte, packet loss, jitter, latency, and download and upload rates. According to them, these "metrics are represented as the percentage of users' tests that come together the minimum recommended performance threshold for watching HD video, executing group video conference calls, as well as playing games at all times of the day" .

Reaffirming the need for regional ISPs

Although there are only three ISPs in India—Airtel Xstream, Reliance JioFiber, and BSNL—a number of broadband providers are successfully competing with the major competitors in various parts of the country.

The selection of ISPs for assessment, and their increasing significance at the local or regional level, is explained by OpenSignal.

"Three national companies, Airtel, BSNL, and Jio, which service clients across all of India, are included for comparison. According to the OpenSignal analysis, "We have also included providers that serve at least 5% of our user base in each city."

For instance, GTPL provides 37.5 Mbps internet download speeds in Ahmedabad, which lags behind Airtel's 46.7 Mbps but beats Jio's 36.4 Mbps. In terms of upload speed and stability quality measures, it falls into the same group.

In terms of internet download speed measurements, Hathway (67.7Mbps) and ACT (60Mbps) outperformed Jio (48.3Mbps) and Airtel (59.1Mbps) in Bengaluru. In terms of upload speed, it is ranked similarly. Hathway and ACT are rated faster in download and upload times in Chennai than Airtel and Jio.

In comparison to Airtel (51.3 Mbps down and 38.8 Mbps up) and Jio (43.3 Mbps down and 33.5 Mbps up), Excitel, a firm with presence in Delhi and sections of the National Capital Region, has a huge edge in the download (77.2 Mbps) and upload (54.7 Mbps) tests.

In Hyderabad, Excitel, Hathway, and ACT have done well; in Kolkata, Alliance, Wish Net, and GTPL KCBPL are proven to be dependable ISPs. It should be noted that Hyderabad and Kolkata have the highest level of broadband ISP competition, with five major ISPs fighting for customers.
