The Rice Exporters Association of India has been granted a one-time exemption from the export prohibition by the government, allowing them to donate 20 metric tonnes (MT) of non-Basmati white rice to Nepal in aid of the earthquake victims.

"The Indian Rice Exporters Association is prohibited from exporting 20 metric tons of non-Basmati white rice (either completely or semi-milled, polished or not) as a one-time contribution to the victims of the Nepal earthquake. The request for exemption has been approved." In a notice, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said.


The government authorized the export of 2.40 lakh tons of non-Basmati white rice to five nations—Comoros, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, and Kenya—in a separate DGFT announcement.


Comoros (20,000 MT), Madagascar (50,000 MT), Equatorial Guinea (10,000 MT), Egypt (60,000 MT), as well as Kenya (1,00,000 MT) have all received notifications about amount.


"Export of non-Basmati white rice to these countries by means of National Cooperative Exports Limited has been authorized notified," it said.


Just before midnight on November 6, an earthquake of a magnitude of 6.4 rocked Nepal, leaving 153 people dead and over 250 injured.


The western Nepalese districts of Jajarkot and Rukum West were hit by an earthquake that caused damage to around 8,000 homes, both public and private.


India is the first nation to supply emergency supplies to Nepali areas hit by earthquakes.
