The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sent a warning reminding students that the MPhil program is not approved by the commission, and they should not enroll in it.

UGC has learned that several institutions are accepting new applications for their MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programs. It should be noted that the MPhil degree is not accepted in this context. As per the notification, higher educational institutions are prohibited from offering the MPhil program under Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022.


"Therefore, it is asked that the University authorities take prompt action to cease accepting new students into the MPhil program for the 2023–2024 academic year. Additionally, it is urged that students decline admission to the MPhil program, according to the notification.


No foreign higher education institution (HEI) may offer any program in India without the commission's prior clearance, according to an earlier ruling from the UGC.


Additionally, according to the guidelines, HELS will not provide programs via any franchise agreements, and the UGC will not acknowledge such programs. This covers joint degree programs, dual degree programs, and twinning programs.


"Many HELs/Colleges have entered into cooperative agreements/arrangements with foreign-based educational institutions/providers, and that are not recognized by the Commission as well as are not engaged in awarding degrees to the enrolled students," the University Grants Commission has noted and been informed. are giving the space.
