Russia's oil exports to India have increased recently, after a month-over-month drop in October and November. Low discounts on Russian oil and refiner payment issues as a result of oil prices above the price limit contributed to the drop in imports.
Following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russia—which previously provided 0.2% of India's total oil needs—has become the nation's main supplier. Since the US and the European Union (EU) slapped various sanctions on Moscow in response to its invasion of Ukraine, the Eurasian nation has sold discounted oil to Asian nations, particularly China and India.
Since Moscow sent soldiers to Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has emerged as India's primary supplier of crude oil, surpassing Saudi Arabia and Iraq in this regard.
In December, conventional crude oil suppliers, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, supplied 1 million and 65,000 barrels of crude oil per day, respectively, to India. 4.44 million barrels of crude oil were imported by India overall in December.
