Pakistani electoral authorities disqualified former prime minister Imran Khan from running in the country's February parliamentary election on Saturday. He will file an appeal, according to his attorneys.

Khan finds it difficult to run for office since he is currently serving a three-year term on charges of corruption and is facing several more accusations. Nevertheless, spurred on by an August ruling by an appeals court to set aside his criminal conviction, he submitted his candidacy papers.

The records state that election authorities disqualified Khan from running due to his convictions, which they said disqualified him from running for office under the Constitution. Additionally, he disapproved of the candidacies of former government members.

Following a month-long crackdown by the government, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party suffered yet another setback as a result of the rulings.

The most well-liked opposition figure in the nation is the 71-year-old former cricket player.

After his political opponents in Parliament passed a no-confidence motion, he was dismissed from office in April 2022. Governmental organizations have been suing him in court ever since.

Azhar Siddiqui, his attorney, said that the Election Commission's prejudice was made clear by the denial. Khan's disqualification, he said, was due to "invisible forces" and the commission.

Rai Muhammad Ali, one of his other attorneys, called the denial of Khan's documents an injustice to Pakistan.

Ali said, "We want transparent elections." "Intentionally, this scenario is being set up to prevent elections. Everybody is afraid. We won't allow them to go away.”
