According to Geojit, state agricultural department data shows that the area under rabi crops in Maharashtra decreased by around 7.4% this season, from 4.89 million hectares a year ago to 4.53 million hectares as of Tuesday.

The state agricultural department released statistics showing that the area under rabi crops in Maharashtra decreased by around 7.4% this season to 4.53 million hectares as of Tuesday, from 4.89 million hectares a year earlier. The state has so far covered 84% of the 5.4 million hectares that make up the typical Rabi crop area. Major rabi crop wheat was seeded on 673,106 hectares, an increase from 790,837 hectares the previous year. 1.30 million hectares of sorghum were planted in year, an increase of almost 8.4%. There was a 2.5% annual decrease in the total area planted with grains, reaching 2.20 million hectares. There were 2.27 million hectares of pulses planted, compared to 2.58 million hectares a year earlier. The area under gram among pulses has decreased to 2.19 million hectares from 2.48 million hectares one year before, according to the report.

It revealed that there were 4.48 million hectares of food grains overall, an increase from 4.84 million hectares the previous year. The research states that compared to a year before, the area planted with oilseeds climbed to 50,612 hectares from 44,653 hectares. 35,877 hectares of sunflower were planted, up from 26,755 hectares the previous year. However, from 3,150 hectares to 1,332 hectares this year, less land was planted with sunflower. Based on statistics from the Maharashtra Water Resources Department, the state's dam capacity was 62.47% as of today, down from 83.33% a year earlier. As of Tuesday, figures from the state agricultural department showed that 4.31 million hectares of Gujarat's rabi cropland remained almost unaltered from the current season. 1.16 million hectares of wheat, the state's principal crop for rabi, were seeded, 6.1% less than the 1.24 million hectares planted the previous year. 1.30 million hectares is the typical area under crop, based on the average of the previous three years.

The acreage dedicated to maize farming rose to 108,380 hectares, representing an 8.2% annual rise. The hectares planted with Rabi grains decreased to 1.31 million hectares, a 4.1% annual decrease. Rabi pulses now cover 635,379 hectares, a 19.6% decrease from the previous year. The primary pulse, gram, was sown on 590,534 hectares in the state last year, compared to 748,991 hectares the previous year. According to the statistics, mustard was seeded on 267,322 hectares of the 267,733 hectares of oilseeds overall, a decrease of 12.1% from 304,039 hectares. Over the previous year, the area planted with cumin increased to 544,099 hectares from 268,775 hectares. The crop covers 350,666 hectares in total. In general, Gujarat produces the most spices.

The hectares planted with coriander fell to 120,234 in the year-over-year decline of 45.4%. The second-largest producer of spices is Gujarat. Among other crops, sugarcane seeding climbed to 172,511 hectares from 160,077 hectares, while tobacco sowing decreased 5.1% to 126,621 hectares from the previous year. Vegetable sowing decreased to 180,435 hectares from 183,881 hectares the previous year. Conversely, the area planted to potatoes rose somewhat to 133,764 hectares from 129,920 hectares the previous year. There were 559,570 hectares of pasture, an increase above the 577,830 hectares during the same time last year.
