The electric car manufacturer Tesla, of which the billionaire is the chief executive and biggest stakeholder, has said that the majority of its US staff is comprised of underrepresented groups. Requests for comment about Musk's opinions, made on his own social media site X, were not answered by the firm."


Despite Tesla Inc.'s attempts to support such programs, Elon Musk blasted diversity, equality, and inclusion on Friday night, calling them "buzzwords."

In December 2020, Tesla—which has its headquarters in Austin and plants in Texas, California, Nevada, and New York—released its first report on diversity, equality, and inclusion. The yearly impact reports from EV manufacturers now include DEI initiatives.


The business's 2022 Impact Report notes, "We are proud to be a majority-minority company, with strong representation of employees from communities that have long struggled to break down historic barriers to equal opportunity in the U.S."


In addition to various internal events to honor employee diversity, Tesla has undertaken recruitment campaigns aimed at women and students from historically black colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions. Additionally, the corporation offers other staff assistance groups, and in 2022 it started a national internal DEI periodical.


The California Civil Rights Agency filed a lawsuit against Tesla in February 2022, alleging "rampant racism" against black employees at the company's Fremont manufacturing. A lawsuit was filed against Tesla by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in September on the grounds that the company had exposed black employees to "severe or pervasive racial harassment."

 

In their impact report, Tesla said that "inclusion is everyone's responsibility." "Development, equality, and inclusion (DEI) concepts are introduced to workers at onboarding, and they are encouraged to join Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which are run by enthusiastic people who "Care about building a strong community experience inside Tesla."
