SIM Card New Rule: The guidelines for purchasing and disposing of SIM cards have been modified by the Department of Telecommunications. It is now forbidden for those who purchase and sell SIM cards to buy multiple SIM cards at the same time. Only a certain number of SIMs will be provided on a single ID, and SIM vendors will need to complete appropriate KYC. This regulation was put in place by the government to stop SIM card fraud.

The regulations for purchasing and selling SIM cards have been modified by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Those purchasing and selling SIMs in such a scenario had to be informed of the new regulations. If not, breaking the regulations might result in both a fine and prison time. The federal government has really tightened its regulations to combat fraud brought on by phony SIM cards. The Department of Telecommunication has released new SIM card regulations in such a scenario. These regulations were supposed to take effect on October 1, 2023, but the government extended the deadline by two months. In light of this, the revised regulations will now take effect on December 1, 2023.

KYC will be required.

SIM card vendors will now be required by law to properly verify the identity of the customer before selling SIM cards. Multiple SIM card purchases at once are prohibited by the government for both buyers and dealers of SIM cards. In other words, consumers won't be able to issue many SIM cards at once. Additionally, one ID will be provided with a restricted number of SIM cards.

The availability of prison time and fines

As per the regulations, all SIM vendors must i.e. Point of Sale (PoS) must sign up before November 30. Any of these guidelines that are broken might result in a punishment of Rs 10 lakh. You can also have to serve time in prison.

There will be controls on fraud.

In fact, there have been complaints that SIM card vendors are providing new cards without doing the necessary testing and verification, which is contributing to fraud. In this case, the government has made it plain that a person would face a three-year prison sentence if they are discovered to be selling counterfeit SIM cards. His license will be blocked as well. In India, there are now around 10 lakh SIM card vendors. Most of them provide businesses and other organizations with SIM cards in large quantities.
