Arvind Panagariya was named as the head of the 16th Finance Commission by an official government order, however announcements on the appointments of the other panel members would be made subsequently.

Arvind Panagariya, a professor at Columbia University and the former vice-chairman of the Center's top think tank, NITI Aayog, was named head of the 16th Finance Commission on December 31 by an order issued by the government.

The order named Panagariya as the head of the 16th Finance Commission and announced its formation; however, additional notices would be sent out for the appointment of the other panel members.

"The Chairman as well as additional members of the Commission shall hold office from the point in time he assumes office till the moment of submission of the report or October 31, 2025, whosoever is earlier," the order said.
