Los Angeles: A California drunk driver was quickly taken into custody after smashing a sign alerting people that police were searching for anybody seen driving while intoxicated.

In August, Clarissa Hernandez crashed her car into an electronic sign in Palm Springs after drinking a pint, or half a liter, of tequila, according to the police.

Hernandez fought free as officers from a nearby DUI checkpoint hurried toward the mangled Land Rover.

Her speech was slurred, and her eyes were bloodshot, red, and watery. She was swaying back and forth all the time, according to a report written by Palm Springs Police Department officer Jay Valdiva.

The officer noted, "She was hostile, irrational, and angry." Hernandez said that he had finished his tequila barely ten minutes before to the collision when he was questioned.

When Hernandez, 27, of Texas, appeared in court on Wednesday, she entered a guilty plea to one misdemeanor count of willful resistance and driving while intoxicated.

According to the Riverside County District Attorney's office, he received a sentence of three years on probation.

Checkpoints are often put up by police in California in an effort to apprehend unlicensed, uninsured, or handicapped drivers.

However, they must alert drivers to the checkpoint's existence in accordance with state rules, which they sometimes do with electronic signboards.
