On Sunday, a hat owned by Napoleon Bonaparte, the 19th-century ruler of the French Empire, will go up for auction in Paris.

roughly twenty of the roughly 120 bicorne hats he acquired throughout the years exist; several of them are in private collections.

The hat is being offered alongside other items of Napoleonic memorabilia that belonged to a businessman who passed away the previous year.

The hat, according to auctioneers, is the true holy grail for specialists.

The majority of the Emperor's officers wore their hats perpendicular to the shoulders, but the Emperor wore his with the cornice parallel to the shoulders, a style known as "en bataille".

According to auctioneer Jean-Pierre Ossenat, "This hat was instantly recognizable everywhere." They knew Napoleon was present when they saw it on the battlefield."

"And he would constantly hold it in his palm or on his head when he was alone himself, sometimes tossing it to the floor. That was the emperor's image and emblem."
