Russian state-controlled arms exporter Rosoboronexport is in talks with Indian businesses about producing aircraft weaponry jointly for the Indian Air Force, according to a reporter for Russia's official news agency RIA early on Tuesday.
According to Alexander Mikheyev, general director of Rosoboronexport, "Russia's export company is working with Indian public as well as private enterprises to organise joint development of aviation weapons and assimilate them into the existing aviation fleet in India," as reported by RIA.
Regarding the Indian firms engaged and the possible start date of manufacturing, no information was given.
In 2022, Russia will account for 45% of India's defense imports, making it the country's top weapons supplier, according to a research released this year by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
According to Mikheyev, the Indian Ministry of Defence has received Su-30MKI fighter planes, tanks, armored vehicles, and shells from Rosoboronexport and Indian partners.
The year began with the combined manufacture of AK-203 Kalashnikov assault weapons by Russia and India.
