Federico Klein: Former state department employee imprisoned for rioting in the Capitol

Due to his involvement in the US Capitol disturbance, a former state department official has been sentenced to over six years in jail.

45-year-old Federico Klein was found guilty in July on 12 counts, including assaulting law enforcement officials and interfering with an official procedure.Klein, according to the prosecution, was among the first group of rioters to enter a tunnel leading to the Capitol on January 6, 2021. With a pilfered police shield, he forced open doors and said, "You can't stop this!"

According to evidence presented during the trial, the former Marine pushed against the line of cops for more than an hour and urged others to assault police. At the time, Klein was employed by the Trump administration in 2017 as a South America expert at the State Department.

On January 19, 2021, a day before President Joe Biden took office, he announced his resignation from the position. Klein was once employed by Mr. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. On Friday, he received a jail term of five years and ten months. "Shocking and egregious" was how US District Judge Trevor McFadden described Klein's behavior.

The prosecutors had requested a ten-year sentence. However, Klein's attorneys contended in a pre-sentencing memorandum that the government was embellishing his involvement in the violence. They said that he "should be sentenced for his actual role in the events of the day, as opposed to the more egregious conduct of others" . The defense team had requested a probationary period of 40 days in jail. There are already over 1,100 charges against individuals related to the disturbance.
