Assembly election LIVE updates: MNF prepared to "sweep" Mizoram; BJP aiming for a "majority" in Chhattisgarh

LIVE updates on the assembly elections: Today, polls will be conducted in two of the five states. The month-long poll is probably going to provide the foundation for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

The month-long contest for polls between Chhattisgarh and Mizoram began today. Polling for the 40-member Mizoram legislature is being conducted in a single phase, while the first phase of voting for 20 seats out of the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly is underway.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress are the major rivals in Chhattisgarh, but Mizoram is the only state with an upcoming election where these two parties are not the only prominent contestants. In this northeastern state, the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Zoram Peoples' Movement (ZPM) are major political forces.

In Mizoram, 174 candidates are running, while 223 candidates will compete in the first round of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections.

On November 17, single-phase voting in Madhya Pradesh and the second phase of voting in Chhattisgarh will both occur. Voting in Telangana and Rajasthan will take place in one phase on November 25 and 30, respectively.

On December 3, the votes in every state will be counted.

Meet Teetar Singh, a candidate who has lost more than 30 elections and is running once again.

Teetar Singh, a 78-year-old daily wage laborer from Ganganagar, Rajasthan, who is a beneficiary of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), has submitted his candidacy to run for legislative assembly for the 32nd time.

Singh, who has run in 31 elections from Gram Panchayat to Lok Sabha since the 1970s but has never won, is making another run at the Sri Karanpur assembly seat on November 25. Singh discussed his goals if elected to office and his resentment against the previous state administrations in an interview with Hindustan Times.
