The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers. It arrived in the western Himalayan nation late on Friday night. The epicenter of the earthquake was situated near the Tibetan border, about 42 kilometers south of Jumla district.

A spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that "42 people died in Rukum and 92 in Jajarkot," identifying the two districts that were most hit. impacted by the earthquake, in the border province of Karnali, which is situated south of the epicenter. Speaking on behalf of the Nepalese police, Kuber Kathayat claimed that over a hundred injuries had been recorded in these two districts.

2015 had an earthquake that claimed about 9,000 lives.

About 500 kilometers from the epicenter, New Delhi, the capital of India, experienced moderate earthquakes. The death toll in Nepal has "deeply saddened" Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, "India is prepared to offer the people of Nepal every kind of assistance and stands in solidarity with them."

The USGS reports that aftershocks of magnitude 4 occurred in the same location many hours after the first earthquake. Nepal is situated on a significant geological fault where the Indian tectonic plate pushes into the Eurasian plate to build the Himalayan range. As a result, earthquakes often occur there.
