On November 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his Bangladeshi counterparts Sheikh Hasina essentially launched the much-anticipated Khulna-Mongla Port train project and the Akhaura-Agartala railway.

He claims that in the last five years, three new train routes have been launched. "Container and partial trains have been traveling between Bangladesh and India since 2020. The prime minister said, "Inland waterways have been created to facilitate passenger and freight transport in the last nine years."

The new 64-km Khulna-Mongla Port rail route and the 7.9-km rail line from Akhaura to Agartala are both intended to speed up the movement of people and products between India and other neighboring nations.

The 12.24 km long Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link was built in Bangladesh with funding provided by India totaling Rs 392.52 crore. A 6.78 km dual gauge rail line in Bangladesh and a 5.46 km line in Tripura are part of this project.

Currently, it takes 38 hours to travel the roughly 1600 km train route from Agartala to Kolkata. There will be a 10-hour reduction in travel time once the train connection opens. The Indian Express quoted Indian Railways executive engineer Sunindra Chaudhury as saying, "For goods trains, the line will be opened immediately but for passenger trains, there will be certain formalities that need to be maintained by the Indian Railways as well as the Bangladesh Railway Board."

Through this endeavor, Khulna's broad-gauge railway network is connected to Mongla, the second-largest port in Bangladesh. This project will improve Mongla Port's operations. It would improve Bangladesh's connection with Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Between Panchagarh and Banglabandha in the north, the rail link will provide a link between Mongla Port and Siliguri in India.

Tripura and Bangladesh were said to have an 856 km long international boundary. However, because of local disagreements, some areas of it remained unfenced. The state's sole road connections to the rest of the nation are made via Assam and a small area in Siliguri, West Bengal.
