"Group Chief HR Officer Niren Srivastava told ET that the policy, one of the first of its type in corporate India, is applicable to around 9,500 of its 11,000 workers and aims to improve employee wellbeing and productivity. All workers, even those in top management, are subject to the new regulation."

One of the biggest brokerage and financial services companies in India, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, has implemented a policy requiring workers to "switch-off" from work and emails after their scheduled shifts of 8.0/8.5 hours, amid the ongoing discussion about work hours.

Group Chief HR Officer Niren Srivastava told ET that the policy, which is one of the first of its type in corporate India, is applicable to around 9,500 of the company's 11,000 workers and is intended to improve employee well-being and productivity. All workers, even those in top management, are subject to the new regulation."

"To ensure effective and clothes that implementation of the “switch off from work” policy, the communicating house will shut down its email servers and employees will be checked off from sending or receiving emails, inside as well as outside the company, after a 45-minute grace period after the shift hours that they were given to wrap up the day’s work."

Additionally, workers will be asked to leave the office grounds if they remain beyond their work schedule or shift time, in addition to the extra 45 minutes of grace.

The group executive director and CEO, Motilal Oswal, said, "We believe that what essential is the employees' peace of mind, satisfaction, wellbeing, and productivity—not the number of hours worked." "We're committed to seeing it through to a successful launch. Because it allows our staff to prioritize their health and well-being, this policy is crucial.

Admin and HR departments are in charge of making sure that all offices are compliant.

Top executives and staff members in investment banking, asset & wealth management, and private equity "who have their own work schedules" are among the group of individuals not covered by this new regulation, according to the CHRO. Additionally, all business units will have flexibility for exclusions based on particular business needs.

"The hours of productivity are what count. Beyond 8.0–8.5 hours, the human brain becomes overloaded, thus we shouldn't discount the extra time spent commuting. According to our ideology, everyone should arrive and go on time, added Srivastava. According to him, "work basically begins when one leaves the house and ends when one returns home, so organizations also need to factor in the three to four hours that people occasionally spend traveling in metro areas."

"The policy will be expanded in the next phase to prohibit access to business-specific apps during specified'switch-off' hours. According to Srivastava, this would be customized based on role mappings and after consulting with the relevant business teams.

Following consultation and agreement with the relevant CEOs and department heads, the corporation put the policy into effect. Managers are also being made more aware of it by HR departments.

"We've put in place a system to monitor how this is going for both management and employees, and we welcome any escalations or issues," Srivastava said.

The purpose of the "Switch-Off" from Work Policy is to support workers' physical, mental, and emotional well-being in order to increase productivity and free up time for personal interests.

What is covered under the policy?

After shift hours, email servers will be shut down and staff members will be logged off from sending and receiving emails.

To maintain compliance across all offices, admin and HR personnel will urge employees who remain in the office after their shift ends to leave the premises.
