Week in tech: Meta's AI push and OpenAI's ChatGPT development
Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Meta, declared that the business would include artificial intelligence into its digital assistants and smart glasses.
Here is a weekly summary of the science and technology news that was reported.
ChatGPT can now converse, communicate, and process photos.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI revealed this week that ChatGPT users will soon be able to browse the internet. According to a Reuters story, this would increase the amount of data the popular chatbot may access over its previous September 2021 cutoff date. OpenAI stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that browsing is especially helpful for jobs that call for current information, such as assisting with technical research, attempting to choose a bike, or organizing a trip. Users of Plus and Enterprise already have access to the feature, and all users will soon have it as well. According to ChatGPT's article, you can enable it by selecting Browse with Bing in the picker under GPT-4. The chatbot can now see, hear, and speak, according to the company's announcement. Since its debut, ChatGPT has only allowed written commands, but new enhancements that will be released over the next two weeks will allow users of paid editions to converse with the AI and visually illustrate their points. Scientists at NASA launch an asteroid sample return probe.
The largest asteroid samples ever returned to Earth were inside a space probe that NASA scientists eventually opened on September 27. According to an AFP story, when the initial cover of the Osiris-Rex science canister removed this afternoon, researchers "found black material and dust on the avionics deck of the Osiris-Rex science canister." However, the US space agency could not specify whether these items unquestionably belonged to the asteroid. On the asteroid Bennu, where it had landed after its 2016 launch, Osiris-Rex had taken about nine ounces (or 250 grams) of dust from its rocky surface. According to NASA, even that little bit should "help us better understand their forms of asteroids that could threaten Earth." On October 24, after a drop through Earth's atmosphere, it completed its 3.86 billion mile (6.21 billion kilometer) mission by touching down in the desert of the western state of Utah, according to the AFP report.
Smart glasses and assistants will use AI thanks to meta
Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Meta, declared on September 27 that the business would include artificial intelligence (AI) into its digital assistants and smart glasses. When they go on sale on October 17th, the second-generation Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses will have a $299 starting price, according to an AFP story. According to Zuckerberg, these smart glasses would also provide users the option to stream what they are seeing in real time. According to the AFP story, the business is also releasing 28 AI characters with "personalities" based on famous persons like Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, and YouTube sensation MrBeast that users can communicate on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. The company's primary annual product event, Meta's Connect developers conference, was held at Meta's headquarters in Silicon Valley.
