Sonia and Rahul Gandhi attend the Congress Working Committee meeting before the announcement of the assembly election date

Just hours before the release of the election dates for five states, Congress leaders Rahul and Sonia Gandhi addressed a meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Monday.

According to sources close to the party, today's conference will focus mostly on the impending Assembly elections in five states and the case census.

In addition to the Gandhis, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, chief ministers of all the states governed by the party, and party leaders are in attendance at the conference.

Manickam Tagore, a member of parliament, said of the meeting: "We are going to discuss the current political situation."

On the Congress-NC Ladakh council victory, Tagore said, "Ladakh council victory is a historic one."

The calendar for the next Assembly elections in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana is expected to be released by the Election Commission of India on Monday.

In this context, the Election Commission will conduct a news conference.

In addition to attempting to unseat the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, and Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram, the Congress wants to retain its administrations in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently accusing the opposition party of aiming to split Hindus via its campaign for the Other Backward Classes (OBC), there are worries inside the Congress over the way in which it has articulated its desire for the caste census.

Rahul Gandhi's phrase "jitni abaadi, utna haq" (rights proportional to population), according to Congress spokesman and frequent CWC member Abhishek Singhvi, leads to a support of majoritarianism.

Although Singhvi soon removed his contentious post on X after the Congress disavowed his comments, some party members are still concerned about how the politically delicate request for the caste census was expressed.
