Sikh man killed in attack over vehicle accident; second such event in a week in New York

A 66-year-old Sikh man was beaten following a minor vehicle accident in New York and later died from brain injuries. Gilbert Augustin, 30, assaulted Jasmer Singh after their cars crashed in Queens. This is the second time in a week that a Sikh has been attacked in this country.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams denounced the event and promised to safeguard the neighborhood in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Jasmer Singh loved his hometown and deserved so much more than his awful demise. I want the Sikh community in New York to know that you have more than just our sympathies, on behalf of all New Yorkers. You have our solemn word that we will defend you and reject the hate that claimed this child's life.

"This week, our team will meet with Sikh leaders to discuss the needs of this vital community in this trying time," he said.

The New York Daily News said that Singh and Augustin's automobiles collided on Thursday, resulting in dings and scrapes on both of them. A guy reportedly yelled "No police, no police" and seized Singh's phone as he attempted to dial 911.

Singh followed Augustin after getting out of the vehicle, according to the complaint, in an effort to retrieve his phone. After an argument between the two men, Singh took Augustin's phone and went back to his vehicle. Augustin then hit Singh three times in the head and face, according to PTI.

When police stopped Augustin on Friday, they discovered that he had a suspended driver's license and that his Alabama license plate did not match his New York registration, according to the report.

This occurred after a 19-year-old Sikh kid who was traveling to a Gurudwara last week was similarly attacked while on the bus in Richmond Hill.

The adolescent was struck on the back of the head by Christopher Philippeaux, 26, who also attempted to remove his turban and said, "We don't wear that in this country."
