Railway Ticket Concession: Seniors are eligible for a 50% reduction on train ticket prices once again

Seniors riding the train have excellent news: there is a railway ticket concession. It is possible to reinstate the senior citizen rail ticket discount. The administration has been asked to provide this by a legislative committee.

Under the leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Radha Mohan Singh, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railway Ministry has requested the Railway Ministry to give serious consideration to reinstating the discount granted to older folks while commuting by train.

In its report to both chambers, the parliamentary committee recommended that the Railway Ministry begin granting seniors in sleeper class and 3A category a one-time exemption.

What was the amount of the senior citizen discount?

The committee's report said that Indian Railways used to provide 50% fare discount to women if the minimum age was 58 years old, and 40% concession to males who were 60 years of age or older. All classes in the Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto group trains were eligible for this discount.

According to the source, the Ministry of Railways introduced the "Senior Citizen Concession Waiver" program, allowing older persons who want to support national development to purchase tickets without receiving any discounts. Able to make reservations. Reports state that on March 20, 2020, the elderly citizen exemption option was removed in an effort to stop the COVID-19 epidemic from spreading.

Seniors are once again eligible for an exemption.

According to the article, elderly folks' train price reduction was eliminated during the coronavirus outbreak. But the Covid protocols are no longer in effect. The train is now moving at its usual pace. The committee said that it is pleading with the Ministry to take a compassionate stance and reinstate the relaxation offered to older folks in the 3A and sleeper classes.

The Supreme Court's ruling on the train fare reduction

The Supreme Court recently denied a petition calling for the reinstatement of senior citizen train price concessions. The court should not provide guidelines in this respect, according to the bench made up of Justices SK Kaul and Ehsanuddin Amanullah.

The government must decide whether to provide a reduction on train prices. A K Balakrishnan filed this plea with the Supreme Court. The court said during the petition hearing that it would not be proper for it to provide the government directives in accordance with the petition because of Article 32 of the Constitution.
