Nawaz Sharif's Big Hint At Political Successor: "Daughter Of The Soil"

In an apparent attempt to designate his daughter Maryam as his political successor, former Pakistani prime leader Nawaz Sharif declared, "I am the son of the soil, Maryam is the daughter of the soil," on Saturday.

Nawaz Sharif, 73, was speaking to a sizable assembly this evening at Minar-e-Pakistan shortly after he returned to Pakistan earlier in the day, ending his four years of self-imposed exile in the UK.

The leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) made an impassioned plea to the applauding audience, saying, "I have served the nation with loyalty whenever I was given the opportunity to fix the challenges plaguing Pakistan. Never once did I hesitate to make a sacrifice. He then claimed that "his relationship with the nation is the same thing as when he left the country" and that he was proud to see "loyalty in the eyes of his people." He continued by expressing regret over the "false cases" that had been brought against him, Shehbaz (his brother and former foreign minister), Maryam, and other PML-N leaders. "They (the police) arrived to take her into custody. The immediate danger was met by this courageous girl, Nawaz Sharif stated, adding, "I am the son of the earth. To the stronger applause of the crowd, he said that his daughter Maryam was also a daughter of the earth.

Earlier, just after ascending the platform at the gathering grounds, Nawaz Sharif hugged his sobbing daughter in a rare public gesture of love for her.

Maryam, 49, is the senior vice president of the PML-N.

Nearly two hours after the scheduled arrival time of 5:30 pm, Nawaz Sharif arrived. Up until that point, Maryam held down the fort from the platform as the agitated audience joined her in supporting their leader for more over an hour. Maryam talked impromptu like a seasoned politician while wearing a maroon traditional salwar kameez with the chunni never departing her head.

She addressed the audience questions, and they were invited to respond, interspersed with a variety of tunes. She praised the people for their support and continued repeating that the opposition would now recognize Nawaz Sharif's true power.

"I considered Minar-e-Pakistan to be a sizable arena. But I never thought it would end up so little for PML-N fans," she remarked, urging the crowd to give her father a hearty greeting when he arrived.

Insisting that the retaliation her party had to endure from rivals was "the greatest injustice," Maryam said, "You, the supporters of Nawaz Sharif, are sincere." Because of this, Allah prevented Nawaz from losing. Today, cruelty has been banished, and spring is returning. Following the rally, the PML-N's official X account shared a brief video of Maryam and Humza Shehbaz (the son of Shebaz Khan) waving to the throng and wrote, "Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz pulled off an extraordinary occasion to welcome Nawaz Sharif." Maryam received both praise and criticism on social media.

Zulfi Bukhari, a leader of the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, was one of the first to praise Maryam Nawaz for her performance on X. He said, "I am glad to know that PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz has found her place in the party as'stage coordinator'," but he also cautioned that she might also "destroy" it.
