Government representatives adopt expectant mothers in THIS Karnataka district: report

Pregnant women at one of life's most crucial periods are being supported by a district in Karnataka by being given care and medication.

The Uttara Kannada district's women are getting monthly health checks, nourishing meals, and medication thanks to a commendable effort by the district government, the Hindustan Times said.

About 358 women have been adopted by district authorities in Uttara Kannada as part of a program to provide expecting moms and their newborns special attention.

According to the district's women and child welfare office, the decision to adopt the expecting moms was made to lower the mortality rate of pregnant and postpartum women.

Pregnant women enrolled under the national health mission system are adopted by higher ranking district authorities.

The adoption program provides care for expectant mothers up to delivery. Additionally, they provide care for the infants by keeping in contact with medical professionals and staff members like ASHA on a frequent basis.

In Uttara Kannada, the prevalence of childhood malnutrition is quite low compared to the severely drought-stricken area of Karnataka.

Gangubai Mankar, the deputy commissioner for Uttara Kannada, "We aim to totally eliminate malnutrition among the newborns along with the mothers by supplying solid food, egg, milk, calcium tablets and various other things...will keep an account of the latest medical conditions of the newborns’ weight, giving them the regular vaccination" .

The ASHA staff as well as the Anganwadi staff were lauded by the deputy commissioner.

Mankar, who has also adopted a needy lady from the hamlet of Mallapur, said that representatives are in contact with the ladies and their families.
