Elon Musk offers Wikipedia $1 billion, but there is a catch
Elon Musk, the owner of X (previously Twitter), has proposed an intriguing idea for Wikipedia. Musk offered to give the online encyclopedia $1 billion in exchange for its agreement to rename itself "Dickipedia" in what he called the "interests of accuracy." The name change had to be in place for at least a year, according to the billionaire's additional requirement.
The world's wealthiest person was asked to donate money to Wikipedia by a number of X users. Ed Krassenstein, a political journalist, encouraged Wikipedia to accept the offer, but he countered that they could always alter it back once they had the money. "At least one year. I mean, I'm not an idiot, haha," Musk said.
Purchase it, and give AI the responsibility of automatically updating it, suggested one of the users. Another said, "Buy it and make Xpedia out of it."
People were surprised by Musk's offer, particularly in light of his own recent foray into social media. He bought Twitter and renamed it "X," using the site as his own theater of revelation and enthralling audiences all over the world. He and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales had a Twitter argument prior to this most recent public threat to Wikipedia.
Jimmy Wales and Elon Musk have fought before.
Prior to Turkey's divisive presidential elections, Wales criticized Musk for allegedly blocking opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Wales claims that when Wikipedia faced comparable challenges, they adopted a determined stance and even battled all the way to Turkey's Supreme Court, emphasizing the significance of defending freedom of expression as a fundamental value and not merely as a buzzword.
In response to this criticism, Elon Musk questioned the Wikimedia Foundation's financial transparency, the non-profit organization that controls Wikipedia. Musk said that a person's mobile device could easily accommodate all of Wikipedia's text material. He pointed out that the vast amounts donated did not seem to be required for the platform's operating expenses and publicly questioned the motivation behind Wikipedia's fundraising attempts.
