DBS and Citi in Singapore experience service interruption due to a data center problem

Following a problem in a data center utilized by the lenders, customers of Singapore's DBS Group Holdings Ltd. and Citigroup Inc. were unable to access banking services for many hours.

On Saturday, there were several hours of payment service interruptions, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore stated it was made aware of the issue by the banks in the afternoon. After users reported difficulties logging into social networking sites and banking services, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. said that its experts had confirmed that its networks were operating as usual.

Outside of Singapore, several of the banks' clients complained on Facebook that they were unable to use the lenders' credit cards or conduct online purchases.

Initial investigations suggest that a problem at a shared data center utilized by the banks was to blame for the service interruptions, according to a statement from the MAS. As the banks endeavor to fully resume their services and provide prompt messages and assistance to impacted clients, MAS has been carefully monitoring their progress.

The most recent hiccup comes after DBS customers last month faced processing delays while using one of its payment services. The biggest lender in Singapore, DBS, was subject to stricter capital requirements in May as a result of problems with its online services that the regulator deemed "unacceptable."

Please rest assured that our systems are secure, and your money and deposits are protected," the bank said on its Facebook page on Saturday, adding that a number of businesses utilized the data center.
