It also stresses the fact that decent work must empower individuals, offer fair wages and secure working conditions, and fundamentally acknowledge the value and humanity of all employees.

History of the 2023 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

On October 17, 1987, the first International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was observed. At the Trocadero in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was written in 1948, more than 100,000 people gathered on that day to pay tribute to those who had died from great poverty, violence, and hunger.

The assembly acknowledged the necessity of coming together to make sure that these rights are upheld and declared that poverty is a violation of human rights. Since then, on October 17th, individuals from various backgrounds, religions, and social origins have united to reaffirm their commitment and demonstrate their sympathy with the underprivileged.

The UN General Assembly designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty through resolution 47/196, which was adopted on December 22 of that year.

"Poverty should not exist in our affluent world.

While we observe the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, approximately 700 million people live on less than $2.15 each day, barely making ends meet.

More than a billion people lack access to necessities including food, water, medical care, and education. More than a billion people lack access to energy, water, sanitation, jobs, housing, and social safety nets.

Conflicts, the climate catastrophe, prejudice, and exclusion, especially towards women and girls, are also aggravating the pain.

This is made worse by a decrepit, unjust, and dysfunctional global financial system that prevents developing nations from making investments in eradicating poverty and reaching the SDGs. 

Nearly 500 million people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030 if current trends continue.

This must change.

Global leaders committed to a bold plan to save the Sustainable Development Goals and speed up efforts to eradicate poverty around the world at the SDG Summit in September, where they also acknowledged the need to overhaul the international financial architecture.

In order to do this, support must be given to an SDG Stimulus of at least $500 billion year in financing for investments. 

As this year's theme emphasizes, leaders also agreed on specific action aimed at reducing poverty and suffering for all people, including improved food and educational systems, respectable employment opportunities, and greater social protection.

The challenge of our time is to eradicate poverty.

We can overcome the challenge, though.
