Following the cloudburst over the South Lhonak Lake in the northeastern state of Sikkim, West Bengal is one of the states affected by flash floods. The Teestra River overflowed as a result of the glacial lake outburst floor, or GLOF, creating a condition akin to a flood in the states it flows through.

After the flooded river caused havoc in the Teesta Bazaar area of Kalimpong, clips also showed houses and vehicles covered in muck.


 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said 10,000 people have been evacuated and are being held in 190 relief camps in nine districts in the state's southern and northern regions as she expressed concern about the flood-like conditions there.


In order to control the flood situation in the state, Banerjee, who is recovering from a leg ailment, declared that she is personally monitoring the situation round-the-clock from her house. She also revealed that several state government officials' leaves had been canceled.


On Thursday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose traveled to the state's northern areas that had experienced flooding.


The northern portion of West Bengal borders Sikkim, where the Teesta river saw a flash flood that left at least 40 people dead, dozens injured, and about 110 others missing.


Banerjee urged HK Dwivedi, the chief secretary, and BP Gopalika, the home secretary, to send a team of top officials right away to West Bengal's flood-affected areas after taking stock of the situation at a meeting.


10,000 individuals have already been evacuated from low-lying regions in the districts. Teams from the NDRF and SDRF have already been informed. With a leg injury that may take another week to heal, I will monitor the issue around-the-clock from home, she said.
