Ashok Gadgil and Subra Suresh, two Indian American scientists, received the National Medals in the disciplines of science and technology from US President Joe Biden on Tuesday in Washington.


The US president awarded Ashok Gadgil the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.


Joe Biden presented Subra Suresh with the National Medal of Science.


In comments made during the occasion, Biden said, "We're committed to bringing outstanding science back to America. "'Outstanding' may be an understatement for this year's awardees. They are exceptional... They have opened the door for a new generation of scientists and inventors to pursue their own discoveries and realize the full potential of our country.


Among the 12 recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation was Gadgil.


Gadgil, a distinguished professor professor of civil and environmental engineering, was honored for "providing essential to life resources to communities around the world," according to Berkeley Engineering. His novel, affordable inventions, which range from fuel-efficient cookstoves to drinking water, help address pressing needs. His work is motivated by a conviction in the worth of every person and our capacity to meet today's major issues.


Gadgil is a retired faculty principal investigator at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is generally regarded as a "humanitarian inventor."


Former National Science Foundation head Subra Suresh is a professor at large at Brown University's School of Engineering.


According to Brown University, he was honored for his groundbreaking work in the engineering, physical sciences, and biological sciences, and in particular for furthering the study of material science and its applications to other fields.


During a ceremony on Tuesday in the East Room of the White House, Suresh was one of nine honorees who received the National Medal of Science.


These honors, according to the White House, are granted to people in recognition of their exceptional contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences while serving the country.
