22 people at Bihar's Jivitputrika festival drown while bathing
According to authorities, at least 22 people have tragically drowned to death in different events in Bihar while swimming in rivers and ponds. All of the victims drowned within a 24-hour period.
They were swimming in ponds and rivers in preparation for the Jivitputrika celebration when the tragedy took place. During the Jivitputrika festival, women in Bihar observe a fast in order to ensure the health of their children.
On a Saturday, two young ladies, 15 and 20, sadly drowned in the Sone River close to Bahiyara Ghat in Bhojpur. While four others attempted to help her, one of them was carried away by strong currents while shooting a picture.
The 22 victims' next of kin would get an ex-gratia of 4 lakh apiece, according to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also expressed his condolences for their loss.
According to a statement from the office of the chief minister, "Five people have drowned in Bhojpur, four in Jehanabad, three each in Patna and Rohtas, two each in Darbhanga and Nawada, and one each in Kaimur, Madhepura, and Aurangabad in the last 24 hours."
