2023's World Smile Day: Historical

The happy face was invented in 1963 by Worcester, Massachusetts-based commercial illustrator Harvey Ball. The picture then developed into the world's most iconic representation of goodwill and cheer.

As the years went by, Harvey Ball started to worry that his emblem had become overly commercialized and that its original significance and goal had been obscured by the market's incessant repetition.  His concept for World Smile Day was born out of such worry. He believed that each year, everyone of us should dedicate one day to spreading smiles and good deeds around the globe. The grin has no knowledge of geography, politics, or religion.

The inaugural World Smile Day celebration was conducted in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1999 as a method to inspire people to carry out deeds of kindness and share joy by simply grinning. Since then, it has been celebrated annually.

The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established in his honor and memory following Harvey's passing in 2001.  Every year, the Foundation remains the official sponsor of World Smile Day.
