WFH coming to an end? Tata Consultancy Services examines a five-day workweek.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest provider of IT services in India, is considering having staff members return to work five days per week. Employees are currently required to work three days per week in the office.

"There isn't a shared official memo. Some business unit human resources (HR) directors have requested that their business group leaders ask their team members to work five days a week. According to a senior executive in the know who spoke on the condition of anonymity, some clients have requested that personnel working on their contracts return to the office.

The executive further stated that there has not yet been a company-wide official memo. "The percentage of individuals returning to the office is fairly healthy, if you look at it. Around 75% of the workforce has returned to the office for at least two days, and 60% to 65% of workers come in three times each week, the CEO continued.

The corporate spokesman declined to respond to a request for an official statement by saying, "As we are currently in the silent period, we will not be able to comment on your query."

Customers in the banking, finance, and insurance sectors have been requesting that the head of the business unit (BU) call staff back to work. Another firm representative said, "Even if the company may look at the five-day model, it does not imply that that the hybrid mode is not authorized.

TCS has been requesting that its workers spend at least three days a week back in the office. A roster will be made for each employee after consultation with them and their team leader or manager, the corporation stated in an internal email in September 2022. "Your respective superiors will now roster you to work from the TCS office, and you as the employee will receive a message on the same," the email stated. Additionally, it said that rostering must be followed.

The management of the organization has previously been very clear that getting workers back to the office is important for both fostering the culture and creativity.

Milind Lakkad, the HR director, noted an increase in female attrition in the FY23 Annual Report. Despite the possibility of other causes, Lakkad stated in the Annual Report (AR) that working from home during the pandemic "reset the domestic arrangements for some women, preventing them from returning to the office even after everything had returned to normal."

The business added that it employed a significant portion of its staff after 2020 and that they must comprehend the value of teamwork and collaboration. "Using the social capital they have accumulated over the years, tenured employees who are highly connected within the organization can work productively and even cooperate electronically. The situation is different for less experienced employees. Collaboration, mentoring, and team building—essential workplace functions—were severely harmed during these two years. The issue of organizational culture is another. Today, more than half of our employees was added after March 2020. By interacting physically with senior coworkers and executives, seeing and imitating their behaviors, and adopting their ways of thinking, new employees get culturally acclimated. Without those encounters, acculturation and employee engagement suffered greatly. All these considerations encouraged us to gradually reopen our offices over the year, according to Lakkad in the AR.
