Indian WhatsApp users may now make payments using UPI apps like Gpay and Paytm as well as credit and debit cards

According to the firm, this action furthers Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for corporate messaging, which will serve as the "next major pillar" for the company's sales expansion.

Now, WhatsApp users in India can utilise UPI apps, debit cards, credit cards, and net banking to make payments using the service. The messaging service, which is owned by Meta, has teamed with Razorpay and PayU to provide users more payment alternatives. This action seeks to entice consumers to shop on the site.

According to the business blog, "We are planning to provide you a tool that will allow you to simply make purchases while chatting. As of right now, users in India can add things to their shopping carts and pay for them using any of their chosen ways, including debit and credit cards, through any of the UPI apps available in India. We're pleased to work with Razorpay and PayU to make sending a message as simple as paying for anything.

Currently available UPI apps include Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others. In the past, users could make payments through these applications on WhatsApp, but only after being taken away from the app.

Notably, there are more than 500 million WhatsApp users in India, but the number of people who can utilise WhatsApp Pay is only 100 million.

According to the firm, this action furthers Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for corporate messaging, which will serve as the "next major pillar" for the company's sales expansion. According to a WhatsApp representative, "While WhatsApp Pay users will remain capped in India, there are no such limit on the number of customers permitted to transact with enterprises on WhatsApp using the other methods."

The only end-to-end purchasing experiences available on WhatsApp in India up until this point were those offered by Reliance Industries' JioMart, an online grocery business, and the metro systems in Chennai and Bangalore. Increasing the number of payment alternatives will help the platform's businesses.

Additionally, Meta has made its Meta Verified subscription programme available to companies worldwide. By using this feature, companies may prove their legitimacy to Meta and have access to a verified badge, improved account assistance, and impersonation prevention.
