Beijing: State media said on Saturday that a mudslide caused by torrential rains happened close to the northern Chinese city of Xi'an, leaving two people dead and 16 others missing.

China has seen fatal floods and unprecedented rains in recent weeks; as of Friday, at least 78 people had died as a result of storms in the country's north.

According to official broadcaster CCTV, "Affected by short-term local significant precipitation, there was a sudden mountains flash flood and mudslide at 18:00 on August 11."

According to the report, two houses in the hamlet have currently been washed away, and infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and the electricity supply, has been destroyed.

According to CCTV, four of the original mudslide victims who were trapped had been rescued.

On Saturday morning, the Chinese official media reported that rescue and emergency response operations were still underway since 16 people were still unaccounted for.

Two hours south of the heart of Xi'an is the town of Weiziping, where the flash floods took place. It is nestled in a little ravine.

Authorities in charge of emergency management in the city issued a warning on Saturday stating that "multiple rounds" of severe storms will soon hit the region.

The statement claims that "mountains and soil will be highly saturated along with continuous rainfall, likely resulting in secondary calamities such as mountain flash floods and mudslides."
