Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, was detained today after receiving a three-year prison term in a corruption case from a court. A trial court in Islamabad also ruled that he could not participate in active politics for a period of five years.
The 70-year-old politician, who is also a legend in the sport of cricket, was found guilty of selling gifts he obtained from foreign guests while serving as prime minister unlawfully. A royal family's watches were among the gifts, according to government officials. In the past, same officials have said that Khan's advisors sold the watches in Dubai.
Judge Humayun Dilawar of Islamabad's district and sessions court unexpectedly issued the decision on Saturday.
Mr. Khan denies any wrongdoing, and his legal counsel announced they will file an appeal right away. The team member who said, "It's significant to mention there was no chance to speak given to present witnesses, neither was there time provided for concluding up arguments,"
